Activist slams Yerima for seeking second term for Buhari
The National Coordinator of Rights Monitoring Group,
Mr. Olufemi Aduwo, on Tuesday, described as
laughable a recent comment by the senator
representing Zamfara-West senatorial district, Sani
Yerima, that President Muhammadu Buhari deserved
to seek a re-election.
Aduwo said Yerima had the right to express his
opinion but canvassing a re-election for Buhari when
the President had yet to spend a quarter of his first
term in office was pointless.
The senator had told journalists in Abuja last
Thursday that Buhari deserved to seek a second term
in office because the President had something new to
offer.
“As far as I am concerned, President Buhari must go
for a second term. You see, he has come back with
something new; the man is incorruptible,” Yerima
had said.
But Aduwo, who spoke with our correspondent on
the telephone on Tuesday, asked Yerima to convince
Nigerians why Buhari should be re-elected after the
President and his political party, the All Progressives
Congress, had denied all the promises they made to
the citizens.
He said, “Yerima is a politician and most of Nigeria’s
politicians want to be in the good book of the
President. By and large, anybody can push Buhari to
seek re-election, but Yerima must understand that
Nigerians are becoming wiser.
“It is the performance of Buhari that would
determine his fate but with due respect to the
President, age will not be on his side by the end of
his first tenure; he will be 77 by then.
“Buhari said some months ago that he wished he was
younger, which means the President knows that he
won’t be ready to present himself for re-election in
2019.
“I am sure the APC will allow him to only serve for
one term. So, Yerima is just a noisemaker and a
jester.”
The human rights activist, however, asked Yerima to
state genuine parameters on which he adjudged the
President fit for re-election in 2019.
He asked, “What are the parameters Yerima is using
to judge the President? Is it his performance? Age is
not on the side of the President, he cannot serve
beyond one term. Yerima is only seeking relevance.”
