 Senator Ireti Kingibe, who represents the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in the Senate, has

blamed the worsening flooding in Abuja on the continued construction of buildings and other developments on green areas, flood channels and flood plains, warning that the obstruction of natural waterways is leaving rainwater with fewer routes to drain.

Kingibe made this known during an interview with Arise News on Monday, where she said she had repeatedly written to relevant agencies of the FCT administration over the continued violation of Abuja’s original master plan.

The senator specifically criticised developments on green areas, gullies, sewage lines, flood channels and flood plains, saying such activities were contributing to the increasing risk of flooding across the nation’s capital.

“Most definitely. Some of the development approved under the current FCT administration is actually increasing Abuja’s flood risk. I’ve been singing the song about the green areas, the gullies, the flood channels, flood plains, because I see them being built on.
